Copper is a noble material, used since antiquity to shape various objects and utensils. Today, it is the most common material for the distribution of hot and cold water. Multi-tasking, copper is present both in water supply and in the evacuation of wastewater and heating.
Copper fittings have one thing in common: they are used to connect several copper tubes to each other. There are then many differences between the types of fittings, particularly in terms of their type of connection which we will explain below.
Soldered fittings:
There are several solutions for assembling copper tubes. The most common technique is to use soldered fittings, or as professionals call them: brazed fittings. In plumbing, brazing is the term used to describe the soldering of two elements of the same nature together (a fitting and a tube for example) with a filler metal. There are actually two types of brazing: soft brazing with tin, occurring at less than 450°C, and hard brazing at more than 750°C. Although this method is very reliable and widespread among plumbers, it is quite complicated to implement and the various soldering lamps can be quite expensive.
Crimped fittings:
Crimping is a connection method combining professional quality with impressive speed! Almost twice as fast as soldering (Study by Holisud cabinet for the Copper Center), it is also very safe, with a cold assembly that does not require a heat source (flame soldering). Its fields of application are also multiple: it can be used in drinking water as well as in heating, gas, etc.
Quick screw fittings:
Whether it is "American" or "bicônique", the quick fitting allows, as its name indicates, to link two elements quickly, using very little tooling: two spanners are enough to set up such a fitting.
