A planer thicknesser is a dual-purpose joinery and woodworking machine. These machines are highly practical and reliable for a range of woodworking tasks. Planer thicknessers can be used to trim down, straighten and smooth wooden boards. They also do a good job at squaring up rough cut lumber. Planer thicknessers are usually made up of a base, an infeed table, an outfeed table, a cutter head and a fence.

A thickness planer has two positions: the first is used to process rough cut timber and the second is trim down boards evenly. The same cutting knives are used in both of these positions. A planer thicknesser is a powerful machine designed to work with various types of wood for extended periods of time. With this in mind, most models allow joiners to work much more effectively. These machines usually feature a welded steel base making them extremely robust and stable. They feature a powerful induction motor which can run off single or three-phase power and provide well over 2000 W. The latest generation of thickness planers are also equipped with excellent tables made of materials like cast steel with noise-reducing lips. These models offer highly accurate settings. Some planer thicknessers are fitted with an aluminium fence and a chip collection system. These models produce less air pollution. Finally, these machines make it quick and easy to switch from tasks like processing rough lumber to finer work like finishing timber.
