There are several types of valves for central heating, including:
- The mixing valve: it is used to mix the hot water directly coming from the boiler with the return cold water to achieve precise regulation. The resulting mixture will provide you with an adequate temperature and optimally heat your home.
- The zone valve: its role is to automatically divert the fluid contained in your heating circuits to supply a specific zone. When installing it, you should ensure that the motor – in most cases – is not oriented towards the ground for effective operation of your zone valve.
Once the type of valve is defined, you will need to consider certain characteristics such as:
- The number of ways: This can vary from 2 to 4 depending on the models. The 3-way valve will prevent heating circuits from influencing each other while protecting your boiler from cold fluid returns that can cause thermal shocks. The 4-way valves, on the other hand, will provide you with a constant flow and eliminate overheating risks while offering protection against stratification (when hot water stays above cold water inside the boiler).
- The thread: There are different types that you will need to consider to ensure compatibility with the pipes/fittings you wish to mount it on.
- Reduced Kv (Kv): it corresponds to the water flow causing a pressure drop of 1 bar through the valve at a specific opening.
- Standard Kv (Kvs): more commonly Kvs, it represents the flow causing a pressure drop equivalent to 1 bar with a maximum valve opening.
