COSTWAY Electric Walk-behind Snow Blower with Dual LED Lights-Blue
A snow blower, or snow thrower as it is called in Quebec, is the ideal tool for fighting against snow and clearing driveways, sidewalks, or snow-covered terraces. It allows for the removal of snow from areas covered in thick layers of snow as well as a garden path from the first snowfall.
To help you choose a snow blower, you need to take into account certain elements.
The elements to consider are the volume of snow you wish to remove, the surface area of the space to be cleared, the type of ground, and the frequency of snowfall in your region.
Based on these criteria, you will opt for an electric snow blower for small-scale snow removal (porch, pedestrian pathway, small sidewalk) or a gas-powered snow blower for larger spaces.
Main models:
An electric snow blower generally offers a working width of less than 50cm and allows you to clear up to about 20cm of snow height. To facilitate use and ensure you can reach the space to be cleared, do not forget to take into account in your choice the length of the power cord to avoid having to use an extension cord. The possibility of folding part of the snow blower when it is stored is appreciated for a smaller footprint of these machines, which are meant to be used infrequently. The snow ejection generally exceeds 5 meters, which guarantees a sufficient distance in most cases.
Gas-powered snow blowers offer a working width ranging from 50 cm to 90 cm, for quicker working on large surfaces. Generally weighing several tens of kilograms, these gas-powered snow blowers are more powerful than electric models and can clear all types of snow: compacted or blown on thicker layers up to 50 cm. These models project the snow more than 5m and up to 15m for the most powerful models. This will be particularly useful for clearing large areas.
One of the elements to consider when choosing a snow blower is the quality of its contact with the ground. For frequent use, on uneven terrain, or for clearing on a base that may be icy, track models will provide better grip and more stability. If you opt for an intermediate model on wheels, make sure to choose a model with chains to avoid slipping and facilitate the progress of the blower.
On gas models, if your terrain is sloped or maneuvers are made in a confined space, you will need speeds that include reverse because these snow blowers can weigh more than 100kg. However, lighting and heated handles are nice to have but not essential: good gloves and a headlamp can replace them.
Finally, you can determine the power of your snow blower by also taking into account the number of hp you will need:
For daily and light use such as a driveway, opt for a small model 65cm/6.5 hp.
The 75cm/9hp models will be preferred for use on more extended surfaces: as maneuverable as the smaller ones, they are more powerful for clearing compacted or accumulated snow.
For professional use, you can choose a snow blower 75cm/ 13hp: with this model, you can clear more complicated, sloped, or uneven terrains as it is more robust.
