The mailbox is essential for receiving mail, letters, packages, and more. It can be made of steel, cast iron, or stainless steel and must comply with the standard to be approved by the Postal Service.
Some information is also good to know regarding mailboxes:
- since 1979, they have been standardized with minimum dimensions of 26 x 26 x 34 cm for the body, 23.5 x 2.4 cm for the mail insertion slot, and 10 x 2.4 cm for the nameplate area;
- the lock must be approved by the Postal Service, as the mail carrier must be able to open it with a master key to deposit large items;
- its installation requires a connection declaration to the Postal Service;
- it must be located 150 cm off the ground, but a height between 90 cm and 130 cm is accepted to allow easy access for people with reduced mobility (in wheelchairs).
Mailboxes available also differ in their materials and features.
- Stainless steel models are recommended for homes located near the coast, in the mountains, or in rainy regions. The lock requires regular maintenance with a lubricant to protect it from rust.
- Lacquered steel models are the most common. They have a lifespan of at least 7 years but can be treated against corrosion to last longer.
- Aluminum models resist weather and corrosion.
- Cast iron models are often mounted on pedestals. They are both decorative and functional.
Some models are intended for specific uses.
- Models with two doors (one on the front and one on the back) can be mounted directly on the front door or built into a wall. This way, the user can access their mail without leaving their home.
- Models with an anti-theft device are recommended in sensitive areas. They are also suitable for people who frequently receive valuable packages.
Thus, the chosen mailbox must meet the criteria established by the Postal Service. In case of lost keys, it is possible to replace the lock and not the box.
