Motorizing shutters is an interesting option for maximizing comfort. Thus, it becomes unnecessary to move to open or close them one by one. The kits are suitable for both swinging shutters and roll-up models.
Swinging shutters and roller shutters can be motorized. In both cases, the power of the motor depends on the weight of the panel.
- PVC is the lightest material with a density of 4 kg/m² for slats less than 8 mm thick and up to 5.5 kg/m² for those 14 mm thick.
- Aluminum is also quite light with a density of 4.5 kg/m² for 8 mm thick slats and 6 kg/m² for 14 mm thick ones.
- Wood is heavier with a density of 11 kg/m².
To calculate the surface area of the panel, one must multiply its width by its height. In the case of a roller shutter, 20 cm should be added to the height to account for the slats that remain inside the box. Then, this surface area is multiplied by the density of the manufacturing material to obtain the weight of the panel.
Two parameters must be considered when choosing a motor for a roller shutter.
- It must be powerful enough to lift the panel. To determine the necessary force, expressed in Newton meter (Nm), one must multiply the weight of the panel by 0.7. Thus, a shutter weighing 7 kg requires a power of 4.9 Nm. For information, the least powerful roller shutter motorization kits display 6 Nm.
- The diameter of the motor must be smaller than that of the axis in which it will be installed.
For the motorization of swinging shutters, kits to be installed under the lintel are available. The user has a choice between two types of kits.
- Wireless motors use radio waves. A remote control allows the user to close the shutters from a distance. Some models can be controlled via a smartphone through a dedicated app.
- The wired kit is controlled by a reversing switch connected to the motor.
An even more comfortable option for the user involves pairing the shutter motorization kit with a programming system.
- The shutters open and close automatically at fixed times. This functionality allows for simulating the presence of occupants in case of prolonged absence.
- It is possible to program actions to be performed on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Thus, the choice of motorization kit depends on the type of shutter (roller or swinging), its weight, but also on the comfort sought.
