Wooden fencing: make the right choice
Fencing a property is the right of every landowner whether the land is built on or not. Wooden fencing is one most popular options available and is used to maximise security and privacy for home owners.
Decorative fence panels present the following characteristics:
- they may also be referred to as privacy screening;
- they are used to set out boundaries and stop your home from being overlooked;
- they can also be used to keep pets in and protect your property from the wind and prying eyes;

Wooden fences require regular maintenance to keep them in good condition.
- The surface must be prepared before it is painted, stained or varnished. This involves sanding, dusting, cleaning, filling holes and applying an undercoat before you set about painting.
- Water-based acrylic paint is microporous. This allows the wood to breathe, which prevents flaking paint and water infiltration.
- Oil-based paint is more moisture-resistant. It also adheres very well to surfaces.
- Alkyd paint is water-based. It has a low VOC content.
- Stains allow the grain of the wood to show through. They also protect the wood from insects and mould.
When it comes to installing a new fence, there may be a few rules.
- You generally won't need permission to install a fence. However, there are some regulations when it comes to height.
- A back garden fence, for example, shouldn't be any higher than 2 metres while a front garden fence shouldn't be taller than 1 metre. It's also worth looking into whether there are any limits on the type of colour you can paint your fence. Failure to seek the appropriate planning permission or to notify neighbours before installation can run you into trouble so be sure to carry out the appropriate measures beforehand.
Finally, bear in mind that a wooden fence can add value to a property, but it must be maintained regularly to keep it looking good.
