DIY hanging side table

• 3 * 22" x 3" Wood

• 2 * 9" x 2" Wood

• 2 * 14" Rope (This will depend how far down you want your table to be. Measure from the ceiling to the spot you want it to hang, times this by two, and add one to be safe. You'll need two pieces of rope this length)

• Small screws

• C hook

Tools:

• Drill

• Drill bit slightly larger than your rope

• Spirit level

These instructions will show you how to make a side table similar to the ones below... but don't be confined to this! All the drilling boards together can be replaced by one larger board if you wish, or a slab of wood for a rustic look, or even a tray (to stop anything sliding off!) Get creative.

Begin by drilling three holes down the length of each of your 9"x2" pieces. Start at the top and work down the 9" piece, marking first 1.5" down, then 3" down, then 3" down again. Drill holes in these 3 places.  Repeat for the other board, and you should have three evenly spaced holes on each board.

Lay out your three larger pieces of wood. Have a go at arranging them differently, and finding a way that you like. If you want to make your table extra sturdy, add wood glue between these sides, clamp, and leave to dry according to the instructions on your glue. Once done, flip the boards over in this position, and lay out your two smaller, drilled pieces over the top. Drill your screws through the wood to secure. You'll want to check before drilling that your screw is the right size, and won't come through the top of the table!

Drill holes in each of the four corners of your side table. This will be where the string will come through, so make sure your drill bit is slightly larger than the width of your string.

Fold each of your rope pieces in half, and bring them together at the loops. Tie your rope together in a knot, leaving a big enough room to hang over a hook. Take the ends of the knot, and pull each through the holes you drilled into your side table. Tie a loose knot under each.

Drill a hole and insert your C hook into the ceiling, making sure your table will have enough space to hang. Go back and readjust the knots if you need to - use a spirit level on top of your table to help it hang evenly. When it's even, add a double knot for security.
