Airbrushes: make the right choice
A pneumatic airbrush is a small-sized paint gun designed for creating precise designs on various surfaces. As its name suggests, it is connected to an air compressor to project the paint contained in the cup.
Pneumatic airbrushes differ in their operation.
- Gravity-fed models have a reservoir located on the top of the gun. Thus, gravity causes the paint to fall into the body of the device. This type of equipment is suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users and can be used with thick paint.
- Suction-fed models are equipped with a reservoir located on the side (left or right) or beneath the body of the gun. This configuration allows the use of a large-sized cup for painting a large area.
The device should be chosen based on the work to be carried out.
- Single-action models allow controlling the air flow with the trigger. Their ease of use makes them suitable for beginners. They are also suitable for painting large surfaces. Moreover, they can be used for ceramic glazing and craft applications.
- Dual-action devices not only allow controlling the air flow but also the paint flow. Their operation requires experience and practice, but they offer various possibilities for a spectacular finish. Indeed, they allow tracing fine lines or creating effects (gradients, shades, etc.).

- Nozzles and needles must be suited to the work to be performed. If a 0.2 mm needle is essential for creating fine lines, a 0.5 mm nozzle is more practical for covering a large area. It is recommended to stock up due to the fragility of these accessories.
- Cups from 2 cc to 10 cc are suitable for precision work. On the other hand, models over 15 cc are necessary for painting a large area. They can be made of glass or steel.
The compressor is useful for providing the necessary pressurized air to the gun.
- Tankless models are appreciated for their affordability. They are suitable for novices.
- Models with a storage tank ranging from 1 L to 25 L have the advantage of providing constant pressure thanks to the compressed air reserve. They are suitable for long painting sessions. Some devices are equipped with a filter to prevent moisture from mixing with the paint.
Ultimately, the choice of a pneumatic airbrush depends on its use (occasional, frequent), but also on the user's budget.
