Compressors: make the right choice
Air compressors are designed to supply pressurised air to pneumatic tools such as paint guns, inflators and blow guns. When choosing an air compressor, think about the volume of the tank, the air flow rate (m3/h), maximum pressure in bar or PSI, and power source. You'll also have to choose between a single or two stage model. Air compressors can be used to sand down bodywork, adjust tyre pressure or power an air tool. Whether you go for a single or two stage model, a tank capacity of 6 litres or a larger 100-litre tank, your air compressor needs to match the air flow and pressure required to power your tools.
Portable air compressors are great for occasional jobs such as powering an air blower or applying hot glue. These air compressors offer the following characteristics:
- a tank capacity of 20 litres or less;
- a maximum of 1.5 hp;
- a maximum flow rate of 8 m³/h;
- 8 bar (B) or 116 PSI operating pressure;
- they can be powered by a 12v car battery (via the cigarette lighter) or mains power (230 V).
Single stage models are best for longer domestic tasks such as gluing, stapling or small painting jobs. These air compressors feature:
- a tank capacity of 25 to 250 litres;
- 1.5 to 6.5 hp;
- a maximum flow rate of 40 m³/h;
- 8 bar (B) or 116 PSI operating pressure;
- two wheels for easy transportation.
Two stage or multi stage air compressors are often used in professional settings and can be used to power a compressed air system. Here are the main characteristics of these machines:
- a tank capacity of 200 litres and over;
- 5.5 hp and beyond;
- a minimum air flow rate of 40 m³/h;
- 200 PSI and over.
Air compressors are equipped with a few different safety devices.
- a pressure gauge to provide a visual indicator of tank pressure;
- a pressure regulator;
- a pressure switch to relaunch the motor as soon as pressure drops below a certain level (usually 4 bar);
- a pressure relief valve designed to releases air in case of excess pressure build-up ;
- a direct outlet.
In short, your choice of air compressor all depends on how you plan to use it and the tools you want to power. No matter which model you pick, it is recommended to clean the air filter regularly and to drain the tank from time to time to prevent condensation.
