Roof sealants

The role of a roofing sealant is to make the roof waterproof. Indeed, its application helps to seal porous materials where water could infiltrate. Used in roof renovation, sealants and other waterproofing agents help delay the replacement of the roof covering.

Sloped roofs concerned are mainly covered with tiles or slates and in case of porosity, it is possible to apply:

- an anti-infiltration coating, an acrylic resin-based coating that prevents water from penetrating the substrate thanks to the application of a liquid elastic product reinforced with a mesh that eliminates cracks;

- a protective paint, which by eliminating moisture and protecting the substrate from water infiltration ensures long-term protection against freezing and aging, UV rays, and bad weather;

- a waterproofing algicide, protecting against aging, freezing, and limiting the appearance of dirt.

Sealants are chosen to be colorless so as not to alter the aesthetics of the covering.

Flat roofs, such as roof terraces, require somewhat different waterproofing agents. For this purpose, the elastoplastic coating is applied in a single layer or multiple layers. The main roofing sealant with such properties is often based on elastomeric bitumen applied with a brush or roller. The primary ones are:

- water-based silicone resins which do not claim any aesthetic function;

- water-based coatings with acrylic polymers to apply on zinc roofs, galvanized sheets, fiber cement, and other non-trafficable surfaces (gutters, zinc channels, etc.).

A roofing waterproofing agent not only makes the roof waterproof but also improves the thermal comfort of the house. In addition to improving the insulation of the house, it helps reduce energy consumption and bills.

To select the appropriate roofing sealant, it is necessary to consider the on-site constraints. Its properties and application method are also decisive.
