The radiant panel is a device designed to heat a space in order to optimize the comfort of occupants during winter. This electric heater spreads warmth throughout the room, transferring it to both furniture and the people present.
Radiant panels heat the rooms in which they are installed by producing infrared rays:
- they provide a sensation similar to being exposed to the sun;
- the infrared rays are called long when the heat is produced by electric resistances heating an aluminum plate;
- the infrared rays are considered short when the heat comes from a halogen lamp.
Also known as a radiant heater, this device emits heat in two different ways:
- it spreads heat by radiation, transferring it to walls, furniture, all present objects, and people;
- it also emits heat by convection;
- it must be connected to a power outlet to emit heat.
Various parameters should be considered during the installation of this heating equipment:
- it quickly heats the room by diffusing a uniform heat;
- this type of heater is recommended for entryways, kitchens, corridors, and guest bedrooms;
- it is possible to connect the device to a timer to control energy consumption.
The power of the radiant panel must be adapted to the space to be heated:
- for a dwelling meeting the RT 2005 standard, the required power is 100 W/m²;
- for a dwelling complying with the RT 2012 standard, it is 60 W/m²;
- the base calculation to retain for the bathroom is 125 W/m²;
- it is advisable to deduct 20% for rooms with a shared wall and 5 to 10% for rooms facing south;
- it is recommended to add 5 to 10% for rooms with large bay windows or exposed to the north.
Like any electric heater, radiant panels can be managed by a pilot wire or an energy manager.
The choice of a radiant panel therefore depends on the space to be heated, its surface, and its insulation level.
