Quickly before we begin, a point on the installation. Two EDF subscriptions exist: three-phase and single-phase.

For a three-phase subscription, things are as follows. Your differential switches will all be of the four-pole type. The simple circuit breakers will be of the four-pole type for 400-volt devices, and uni+n for 230-volt devices.

For a classic single-phase subscription, all the equipment will be single-phase: the differential switch and the circuit breaker (uni+n). Only large motors or large 230-volt pumping systems will require two-pole circuit breakers.

What about the four-pole circuit breaker specifically?

This four-pole circuit breaker will therefore serve to protect these devices against short circuits and overheating, by switching to the OFF position in the event of a problem. The advantage of the circuit breaker is that it is reusable after a failure, and thus offers an economical solution in the long term.

The difference with the three-pole models lies in the presence of a 4th pole to accommodate the neutral. Thus it adapts to all three-phase circuits, whether it is only 3x400 V or those also requiring 230V between each phase and the neutral. Whether it's a motor, a pump, or an oven, this device will do the job. The three-pole models, on the other hand, are to be reserved for motors set to 3x400 V and not requiring neutral.

Then, as with all electrical protection devices, it is necessary to choose the right rating, in amps, depending on the power of the device to be protected. 20A is enough for cooking appliances and water heaters in three-phase, but 32A and 63A models can be used for more powerful devices, such as radiant panels or underfloor heating over 7000W. You will also find D-curve models perfect for motors, as they tolerate overcurrent peaks at startup and do not trip.
