The instantaneous gas water heater provides hot water on demand. It has many enthusiasts because of its practicality and the decrease in the cost of its fuel.
Instantaneous gas water heaters have features to be aware of:
- they produce domestic hot water through the combustion of gas;
- they are most often fueled by the city gas network;
- it is possible to use propane or butane gas bottles with very few modifications to the device;
- they produce hot water on demand. The production begins when the user turns the tap on.
This type of device has various advantages.
- The production of hot water on demand means that the device does not have a hot water tank. This makes it easier to install.
- This type of device is also ergonomic. Users thus have the possibility to install it in a confined space.
- It can be used in a dwelling as well as in a motorhome or a boat.
- The production of hot water is unlimited for devices connected to the city gas network.
Instantaneous water heaters are characterized by their flow rate measured in liters per minute:
- the available models display a flow rate ranging from a few liters to more than 30 l/min;
- the values displayed by manufacturers relate to water heated to 25 K (kilocalories), which is about 40 °C;
- if the user wishes to increase the water temperature to 60 or 65 °C, the flow rate announced by the manufacturer must be divided by two.
The available devices are distinguished by their air supply system and gas exhaust.
- Classic models exhaust the combustion gases through a chimney flue. Thus, openings must be created in the wall to renew the air in the room.
- The so-called sealed devices use a vent system for exhaust. A double conduit passing through the roof or through the exterior wall ensures the air supply and the evacuation of combustion gases. This type of equipment is suitable for installation in a closed room.
- Models with a flow rate lower than 5 l/min do not require a gas exhaust system.
Instantaneous gas water heaters are easy to install and are suitable for meeting a low demand for hot water. The choice between piezoelectric ignition or pilot light depends on the desired level of comfort.
