VMC systems are installed to optimize the air renewal in the home while avoiding heat loss. Ventilation grilles must be put in place to bring in fresh air to replace the stale air evacuated by the extraction vents.
First of all, some information should be known regarding Controlled Mechanical Ventilations:
- their installation has been mandatory since March 24, 1982;
- the minimum volume of air to be extracted (in m³/h) in each room is defined by the decree of October 28, 1983;
- these devices are useful for renewing the air and reducing humidity levels in order to prevent the proliferation of fungi.
The air intake grilles have some characteristics to know:
- they are essential in the case of installing a single-flow VMC system;
- they allow fresh air from outside to enter the house;
- the self-adjusting models adjust the airflow according to pressure;
- the hygro-adjustable versions adjust the airflow depending on the air humidity level in the room.
Some options can assist in choosing the device to install.
- Some models are equipped with an external deflector to limit water infiltrations. This type of equipment is recommended in rainy regions.
- The available air entries are mostly equipped with a system preventing insects from entering the rooms. This option is desirable for the comfort of the occupants.
- Some references are equipped with a flap or a shutter.
- Others offer the possibility of installing an acoustic hood. This option is appreciated as it allows reducing noises coming from outside.
- Different colors are offered to suit all tastes.
Some rules must be remembered for the installation of ventilation grilles:
- the incoming air flow must be greater than or equal to the outgoing air flow (through the extraction vents);
- they are often installed on window joinery;
- it is also possible to install them on roller shutter boxes;
- they are to be installed in the living room, dining room, and bedrooms;
- they must not be installed in rooms equipped with extraction vents such as the kitchen, the bathroom, or toilets.
The choice of air intakes depends on the desired flow rate (between 15 and 30 m³/h) and the space available for their installation. However, the aesthetic criterion should not be neglected.
