A stay is a metal piece - most often called a "fitting" - that operates with the drop-leaf of a piece of furniture. It can hold it horizontally - as is the case with secretary drop-fronts - push it upwards, or simply assist in the movement of the door.
We distinguish different types of stays:
The stop stays are very simple and common stays. The fixtures can be parallel to the stay's arms or perpendicular depending on the need. Its particularity comes from the fact that its travel is blocked by a stop notch at about 150°.
The hinge stays are similar to stop stays, the only difference is that their travel is blocked by the articulation - the "knee".
The brewery stays have the particularity that their two fixtures are perpendicular to the arms and perpendicular to each other. These stays are originally intended for folding tables and benches.
The gas stay, also called a gas strut, comes in the form of a rod and ensures a smooth closing of the upper drop-leaves. Gas springs should be mounted in such a way that when at rest, the piston rod is directed downwards unless they are designed for mounting in any position. This ensures optimal lubrication of the guide and sealing system.
Similarly, for a drop-leaf, you can use a drop-leaf stay or a lift-up stay which operate with a spring system.
It all depends on your needs and your decorative desires! To emphasize durability, go for steel pieces and if you are looking for something with a precious appearance, consider polished brass!
