Outdoor floor lamps: make the right choice
Functional and aesthetic, the garden lamp post is a decorative element designed to illuminate outdoor spaces. It allows for the brightening of pathways, outlining a terrace, and enhancing an exotic plant bed or a small water feature.
In a nutshell, a garden lamp post is a larger and brighter version of a standard lamp. As such, it's not really recommended for casting a soft light to create a cozy atmosphere. Nevertheless, the lamp post is perfect for:
- lining a pathway;
- defining and illuminating a terrace, especially for having a nocturnal meal in summer or organizing friendly gatherings at home;
- highlighting certain features in the garden (exotic plant bed, water feature, natural stone wall, etc.).
Depending on its design, the lamp post can confer a wide variety of styles to its environment. It can be:
- vintage and recall the lights of the 19th or early 20th century;
- rustic, solid and sturdy, when made of pyrex glass and cast iron, metal, or aluminum;
- modern, light, and resistant, when it is made of polycarbonate or from composite materials;
- solar and sporting an ultra-modern or sometimes futuristic design (characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a sober color).
Most often, a garden lamp post:
- provides direct and fixed lighting, very useful throughout the year (winter and summer);
- is equipped with a halogen or solar bulb and a dimmer switch, allowing to increase or decrease its brightness. The ambiance lighting obtained is pleasant, but rarely manages to compete with the unique atmosphere created by a small table lamp.
Before choosing a particular model, it's important to consider its features and think about where it will be installed. Indeed, a relatively small model will be completely covered and will seem tiny next to a large tree. Thus, it's better to:
- choose a large lamp post for a spacious garden or an area around trees;
- opt for medium-sized designer lamp posts to highlight an original outdoor living space;
- place lamp posts with an atypical design on the lawn or in a clear area, to reveal their personality;
- combine designer lamp posts with outdoor living rooms or unique decor sets.
The choice of a garden lamp post mainly depends on individual tastes and the environment in which it will be placed. In case of hesitation, it's better to opt for sober and classic models.
