A lathe center is a tool that has been ground to a point to precisely position a workpiece on an axis. It has an included angle of 60°. The primary use of a center is to ensure the production of concentric work; this allows the part to be transferred between machining operations without loss of precision. A part can be turned in a lathe, sent for hardening and tempering, then ground between centers in a cylindrical mill. A center is also used to support longer parts where cutting forces would excessively deflect the work, reducing the finish and accuracy of the part.
