Danfoss is a Danish company founded in 1933 by Mads Clausen in Nordborg; the name comes from the contraction of Denmark and pit, flow in Danish. However, Danfoss had already existed before that date... in his parents' attic, when the young Clausen was designing automatic valves for refrigeration systems. The family farm was later transformed into a science theme park. It was an immediate success, and in the years 45-55 the company expanded and exported to Belgium, France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, England, the Netherlands and as far afield as Spain.
In 1966, Mads Clausen died, leaving the management to his widow. In 1995, his son Jörgen took over, continuing until 2008. The company's turnover has exceeded two billion euros, and it employs 18,000 people, rising to over 22,000 in 2014. Danfoss has diversified into heating (including all accessories for radiators), refrigeration, air conditioning and even solar energy. It manufactures in France at its Reyrieux plant in the Ain region.
It is worth noting that the company is run by a foundation, The Bitten and Mads Clausen Foundation. Danfoss has signed the United Nations Global Compact, as part of its commitment to the environment and the fight against global warming.
