Generators are designed to product electricity from a petrol or diesel engine. In order to make the right choice, think about your electrical power needs, power regulation (condensor, AVR or inverter) and power output (single or three-phase). It's also important to consider run time, ignition, noise level and features such overload protection and oil temperature control. Generators can be used to produce off-grid electricity wherever you are. Used as an alternative or backup power source, generators can be used to operate most electrical appliances. Generators can produce direct current or alternating current electricity. The most common models tend to run on petrol, natural gas, LPG or biofuels.
There are several different types of generators:
- Portable generators which are typically used in motorhomes, homes (for various applications) and on construction sites.
- Stationary standby generators which are used in case of power failure in sensitive areas (e.g. hospitals or military use) or for domestic use.
- Compact generators which offer 1 to 6 kW (or up to 10 kW for domestic use) and 230 v single-phase to 400 v three-phase power.
The main characteristic to bear in mind when investing in a generator is power output in Watts (W) or Kilowatts (kW) for actual power.
Picking the right generator for your needs
The generator power output and regulation technology determine how it can be used.
Power output all depends on the voltage system: generators can produce single or three-phase power (for professional or intensive use). Some generators regulate power output electronically (for example, AVR generators and inverter generators).
Here are a few examples of different characteristics and applications:
Portable and motorhome generators: 0.7 kW - 2 kW / Single phase / Petrol
Features: 12v output
Quiet domestic generators: 7 kW - 16 kW / Single phase / Gas or LPG
Features: Auto start / engine security
Portable and site generators: 3 kW - 10 kW / Single or three phase / Petrol or diesel
Features: Electric start / wheel kit / fuel tank alarm
Heavy-duty and three-phase generators: 12 kVA - 250 kVA / Three-phase / Diesel
Features: Auto start / engine security
