A turning center is a tool that has been ground to a precise point to position a workpiece on an axis, with an angle of 60° included. The main use of a center is to ensure that concentric work is produced, which allows the part to be transferred between processing operations without loss of precision. A part can be turned on a lathe, ejected for quenching and tempering, and then ground between centers in a cylindrical mill. A center is also used to support longer workpieces, where the cutting forces would excessively deviate from the workpiece, reducing its finish and accuracy.
