Outdoor wall lights are used to illuminate terraces, courtyards, pathways, or gates. Mounted on the wall, they cast direct or indirect light to highlight the architecture of the building.
Outdoor wall lights are distinguished by their lighting system.
- The most common models are manually operated. Users turn them off or on using a switch or a push button.
- Automatic versions are equipped with motion detectors that allow them to light up in the presence of a person. Users can adjust the brightness threshold at which the light operates, the sensitivity of the motion detector, and the lighting duration.
- Some models have a timer that automatically shuts the light off after a predetermined period of illumination. The device is activated when the user presses a push button.
Outdoor wall lights must adhere to standards to ensure their durability, as well as the safety of users and the house.
- The CE marking indicating compliance with European standards must be present. Some models are also stamped with NF to indicate their compliance with French standards.
- The Protection Index (IP) determines the level of protection of the light against moisture and dust. While an IP 23 rating is a minimum, an IP 65 rating guarantees optimal protection against water jets and dust.
Other factors to consider when installing outdoor wall lights include:
- low-energy bulbs are preferred for long summer evenings;
-the timer and motion detector settings should be adjusted to avoid energy overconsumption;
- materials, models made of stainless steel and aluminum are suited for seaside homes due to their resistance to rust;
- style, outdoor lighting fixtures are available in contemporary, rustic, retro, and other models;
- the power source as some wall lights can be solar-powered and therefore energy self-sufficient.
The choice of an outdoor wall light depends on the location of the house, the climate of the region, and the desired level of comfort. Aesthetics should also be considered as lighting fixtures are an integral part of outdoor decor.
