Patio awnings : make the right choice

Awnings are a handy way to create shade over a terrace or furnished area in the garden. In addition, they canbe used as decorative elements on a balcony or over an outdoor space.

Most importantly, your choice of awning should be based on where it will be installed.
- An awning can be placed on a terrace or balcony or in front of a shop.
- A window awning is installed on the outside of a building to provide shade. It can be tilted to maximise coverage.
- An awning side shade is used to provide protection from the wind and UV rays . It can be considered a decorative element in its own right.
- Garden awnings are easy to assemble and disassemble when the sun gives way to rain and snow. A free-standing model can be moved aroundto suit your needs.

The dimensions of the awning must be suited to the surface you want to cover. In order to achieve this, there are two factors to consider:
- The awning must be as wide as possible to cover the length of a terrace, balcony or window.
- The projection must also be correctly calculated as this determines the depth of the shadow cast on the ground. For example, an awning with a 2.5-mere projection offers a shade depth of 1.2 metres in full sunlight compared to 2.3 metres for a model with a 3.5-metre projection.

Choosing a fabric is an important part of selecting an awning, not just from an aesthetic point of view, but also in terms of comfort. There are three types of commonly used materials.
- Polyester has the advantage of being inexpensive, but the colours will be more sensitive to weathering.
- acrylic is highly resistant to UV rays. In addition, it is easy to maintain.
- Micro-perforated PVC fabric filters UV rays while allowing air to pass through for better ventilation. This ensures maximum comfort.

Another tip: choose a waterproof fabric for areas with a humid climate and a breathable model for sunny regions.
In summary, your choice of outdoor awning will depend on location, climate and the size of the surface to be covered, as well as your own tastes.
