Used for heating systems, black steel is quite common in large installations and commercial residences. Caps, elbows, nipples, or tees, the fittings for black steel are as varied as those for copper or PEX. Come visit our extensive catalog of black steel fittings at very affordable prices!
Black steel is particularly appreciated for heating installations. Its resistance to the highest temperatures (110°C) and its good performance under pressure make it a very qualified material for this job.
However, do not forget that it is prohibited for drinking water supply. The only steel usable for this purpose remains, in France, galvanized steel, for both hot and cold water.
The main connection system of our black steel fittings is threaded. Equipped with threading, these behave just like other screw-type fittings. You will therefore need to ensure the tightness of this fitting, using both hemp and Teflon.
Sealing with hemp:
Sealing with hemp is done in several steps and requires two distinct elements. A spool (also called a doll) of hemp as well as sealing paste. After vertically scratching the fitting's thread with a hacksaw, wrap the hemp in the direction of screwing. The scratched thread will allow for better adhesion.
Coat everything with a bit of sealing paste that will stay in place thanks to the hemp. Then insert this male part into the corresponding female part.
Sealing with Teflon:
Teflon is a water-repellent material that guarantees a very good seal of the fitting. It comes in the form of a roll and requires no additional sealing paste, nor any prior preparation of the fitting.
As with hemp, wrap a band of Teflon around the threaded fitting. Continue until the thread is barely perceptible to the touch. Then insert it into the female part. If you make a mistake on the amount wrapped on the fitting, however, you will have to start over!
