Choosing the best snow shovel for you
All snow shovels are designed to work slightly differently:
traditional snow shovels tend to feature a scoop measuring 45 to 63 cm and can be used to shovel or push snow;
snow roof rakes have a wider head that measures around 63 to 89 cm in width and can be used to clear large quantities of snow off a roof;
sleigh-style snow shovels can hold the most amount of snow. They feature a wide and deep scoop (around 40 x 80 cm to 70 x 80 cm); this makes them ideal for clearing;
push snow shovels allow you to move snow around without lifting it and can also be used to scrape or even break through ice if they have the right design and are made of strong materials.
Some kits come with snow brushes or ice scrapers that allow you to break easily through the ice.
Clearing snow from the pavement
While it isn't a legal requirement to clear the snow from the pavement in front of your house, it is good manners!

Snow shovel materials: PVC, wood or aluminium
In addition to design, snow shovels also differ in terms of blade material.
PVC blades are best for occasional use. They are also great for pushing freshly fallen snow.
Aluminium shovels are the best option if you're looking for strength. Both lightweight and durable, these shovels are suitable for clearing away denser snow. They can be equipped with a telescopic aluminium or wooden handle.
Wooden shovels are generally designed to push snow rather than anything else. Some are equipped with a metal wear strip for increased strength.

Features of a snow shovel
When choosing a snow shovel, you might want to consider the following characteristics:
the length of the handle should match the size of the user;
an ergonomically designed handle will help you to avoid back pain;
an angled handle will make the shovel easier to handle which can reduce back strain. This is important when you consider that each shovelful of snow will weigh about 5 kg;
a steel wear strip at the end of the blade will allow you to break through frozen snow;
a blade with raised edges on both sides will help to concentrate more snow into the scoop when shovelling;
ribs on the blade make for a stronger surface;
a larger blade allows you to clear snow faster but will be heavier to handle.
Other snow removal tools and methods such as de-icing salt and snow blowers can also be used during particularly heavy snowfall.

Ice scrapers and snow brushes for cars
There are various ways to clear snow from your car without scratching it:
Snow brushes for cars can have hard or soft bristles and may come in a kit with an ice scraper. These tools may feature a straight or angled handle.
A foam-head snow brush as the advantage of not scratching the paintwork of your car! Some are even equipped with a telescopic handle.
