Gate stops

There are 4 different types of fixes for your gate: stops, brackets, supports, and butt connectors. Let's review them first, then share some tips.

- Stops are generally intended for older, traditional swinging gates. They add a certain charm to your exterior. They work with a toggle mechanism, meaning your door will latch directly into the stop when you push it. You can easily close your door by releasing the swinging gates using your foot.

- Brackets can be used for sliding or swinging installations, they help cushion the doors when the gate opens but do not hold them in place. To fully perform their function, brackets are usually equipped with rubber to avoid making marks or dents on the gate.

- Supports are designed to block the doors when they are closed. The best models are equipped with a small clip and are positioned equidistantly between the 2 gate posts; the swinging gates fit into them when they close.

- Butt connectors have a very simple operation. A ring is placed on the ground and a bar is fixed to the gate. When the gate is closed, you simply place the bar into the ring on the ground to firmly maintain the gate in its closed position.

For stops, be careful to place them in spots that do not interfere. One may not always realize the consequences of poor stop placement when the gate is open, but once closed, it is easy to trip over it or get blocked (if you want to mow your lawn, park an extra car, etc.)

For supports and brackets, if you have a low-frame car (such as a sports car), be sure the accessory does not protrude too much from the ground to avoid catching your vehicle.

Butt connectors can be a good alternative to supports as they are discreet and can easily be paired with small support brackets without clips. If you opt for a butt connector, consider getting an espagnolette lock to attach behind your gate to store the bar during the day (and prevent it from hanging and damaging your gate by rubbing against it).
