Description

General description

Our Heated Roost Maternity Bat Box is designed to meet the needs of ecologists, consultants, and developers for a heated bat roost that can be used in mitigation schemes when a maternity roost is lost. According to guidance from Scottish Natural Heritage, the heated bat house is the most effective form of mitigation for pipistrelle species. This bat box is suitable for larger roosts or maternity groups of pipistrelle bats and features a waterproof heater that enhances internal temperatures, which can be thermostatically controlled by the user.

It comes in two parts: the bat box (to be fitted outside) with a 10-meter long flexible cable, and the temperature control unit (to be fitted inside) with a mains cord and 13A plug. The installation process involves three simple steps:
  • Fit the bat box on the wall.
  • Run the 10-meter long flexible cable down the wall into the house or building and plug it into the Temperature Controller.
  • Plug the Temperature Controller into a mains socket.
  • Once the power is switched on and the RCD plug is clicked in, the heating system will be operational.

    Usage

The Heated Bat Box is designed to be user-friendly, operating as a 'plug and play' system. It requires no wiring, making it accessible for anyone to install. The internal heater is thermostatically controlled, allowing users to set the desired temperature. Operating costs are modest, with electricity costs unlikely to exceed £20 even if the heater is left on year-round.

The design includes a small fireguard to prevent bats from getting too close to the heater, and alarms are in place to warn of overheating and disconnection.
