Description

The Wolf Engineer's Bench 5-Speed Pillar Drill is built for workshops and maintenance departments that need consistent accuracy rather than a light-duty hobby drill. The headstock is cast iron and the base and column are precision-machined cast steel, giving it the rigidity to hold true under repeated use rather than flexing or drifting out of alignment over time. A 13mm keyed chuck on a JT taper drive shaft handles a wide range of bit sizes securely, while the twin 5-speed taper pulley arrangement, driven by a 350W capacitor-start induction motor, covers everything from slow, controlled drilling in metal to faster speeds for wood and softer materials. Changing speed is a case of loosening the tensioning bolt and repositioning the belt, with the pulley chart on the headstock removing any guesswork.

Safety features are built in rather than bolted on: a transparent chuck guard and enclosed drive assembly are backed by a micro-switch that cuts power the moment the top cover is opened, and a no-volt release switch stops the motor restarting unexpectedly after a power cut. The worktable tilts left or right to any angle and rotates a full 360 degrees around the column, so awkward or angled holes don't need the workpiece repositioned by hand. It's supplied with a 2.5" all-steel engineer's vice and fixing bolts for holding work securely during drilling.

Cast iron headstock, cast steel base and column – gives the drill the rigidity to hold accuracy under repeated heavy use without flexing.
13mm keyed chuck on JT taper drive – accepts a wide range of bit sizes and holds them securely for precise drilling.
Twin 5-speed taper pulley system – covers slow speeds for metal through to faster speeds for wood, adjusted via a simple tensioning bolt.
Micro-switch cover interlock and no-volt release – cuts power when the guard is opened and prevents the motor restarting after a power cut.
360-degree rotating, tiltable table – repositions the work rather than the operator, making angled and awkward holes easier to drill.

Great value for money. Vice is a bit weak but works ok. Machine vibrates a bit which makes it a bit noisy.

Heavy base and good motor and drive system offering 5 speeds. Great for a small workshop setup but wouldn’t think this would cope with a heavy workload. I’m using for timber drilling so assists me to make precise cutting depth and position. Not sure this would be a great metal working drill. Hoping it will cope with mortise drilling ?. The extra vice which comes with the drill is cheap and not great! The drill depth is limited as the pillar isn’t massive so take this into consideration when looking for this type of item

This could have been an outstanding buy but spoilt by poor finishing and careless inspection. There were two issues that might be considered dangerous, four of poor finishing such as sharp edges. Having said that an hour or two spent correcting the problems produced a useful tool. It drills round holes I am pleased to report.
