As its name suggests, a pressure reducer is useful if the water pressure provided by the distribution network is too high. Whether adjustable or not, this equipment helps to protect sanitary installations and appliances such as water heaters and household electronics.
A pressure reducer consists of various components:
- a single-piece body made of brass or bronze, metals that resist corrosion;
- a shutter equipped with a spring that reduces water flow to achieve the desired or pre-set pressure;
- a diaphragm;
- a screw or a knob for adjustment (for adjustable models only);
- a port for installing a pressure gauge if it is not provided.
This device is essential for several reasons.
- Too high pressure from the water distribution network can damage the pipes (leaks, breaks, etc.). The pressure is considered high if the user hears a banging noise (water hammer) after closing the tap.
- The installation of this device makes the toilet flush less noisy and prevents splashing.
- This accessory reduces pressure and, concurrently, water consumption. It thus allows savings by avoiding waste. Indeed, an open tap for 10 minutes dispenses 113 L of water at 3.5 bars; 136 L at 4.5 bars; 170 L at 7 bars, and 211 L at 10 bars.
Two types of pressure reducers are available.
- Fixed-pressure models are the most common. They are factory set to deliver a constant pressure of 3 bars.
- Some devices called pressure regulators are adjustable. Thus, the user has the ability to increase or decrease the pressure according to their needs. An integrated pressure gauge on the equipment allows them to adjust their settings precisely.
Some information is essential for optimizing the installation of this type of equipment:
- it is installed at the water meter outlet, after a shut-off valve;
- it is available in male/male, male/female, or female/female versions to suit all installations;
- the standard size of the fittings is ¾ inch, or 20 x 27 mm;
- it is important to respect the direction of installation indicated by an arrow drawn on the body of the device otherwise the water will not reach the pipes.
Therefore, the installation of a water pressure reducer is recommended to save on the water bill. This device also optimizes the comfort of the residents and ensures the proper functioning of sanitary installations.
