Description

General description

Osmo Decking Oil is specially formulated to meet the demands of wooden decking while preserving the natural character of the wood. It is safe for humans, animals, and plants once dry, and offers high resistance to water and dirt. The oil is breathable, reducing water logging, swelling, and shrinkage, and features a microporous, penetrating finish that does not crack, peel, or flake. No sanding is necessary when topping up the coating.

Technical specifications

  • Dry time: 12 hours
  • Coverage: 24m²/L with one coat
  • Recommended coats: 2 coats, or one coat plus top coat of Osmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430
  • Moisture content max. for wood surface: 20%
  • Surface preparation

  • Bare wood species with high natural extractives need to weather for a minimum of 4 weeks before initial treatment or be cleaned with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner.
  • Resinous wood (e.g., Larch, Douglas Fir) requires at least 6 weeks of weathering.
  • Pressure impregnated wood and tropical species (e.g., Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, Iroko) need to weather for at least 3 months.
  • Cedar also requires a 3-month weathering period.
  • Greyed and weathered wood can be refreshed with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel before applying the oil.
  • Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and frost-free.
  • Installation

  • Stir well using a flat stirring stick or spatula before use.
  • Thoroughly clean or lightly sand old microporous stains or completely remove old varnishes before application.
  • If sanding is done, some fresh wood species must be weathered again to improve absorbency.
  • Sanding should be to finishing grades of no more than P120 grit.
  • Always wear a dust mask when sanding.
  • If possible, apply the first coat to all sides of the wood before installation.
  • Usage

  • Apply using a stiff brush (Osmo Flat Brush) or a lint-free cloth, ensuring to apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain.
  • For easier application, use the Osmo Decking Brush (150 mm), designed specifically for decking.
  • Allow for good ventilation while drying; lower temperatures and higher humidity will delay drying.
  • Once dry, apply the second coat thinly.
  • If a less intense color is desired, use clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 for the second coat.
  • Choosing a richer, darker color provides higher UV protection.
  • Avoid using clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 as a standalone finish due to limited UV protection.
